Bee-bots in preschool

Pre-K Robotics and Early Coding Program

Hello! My name is Mrs. Ghorbani and I will be working with the Pre-K students on Robotics and Early Coding. Students will work with me in small groups for thirty minutes a week.

You may be hearing the term STEAM a lot these days. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math and is a curriculum that integrates the five subjects into one discipline. Coding is a skill that would fall under STEAM learning. Coding is the process of using programming language to get a computer (robot!) to do what you want it to do.

Coding is becoming an integral part of many future careers. When students have an understanding of coding they can become producers, rather than just consumers, of digital technology. Coding can be thought of as a new literacy for the twenty-first century that provides different ways of thinking, communicating and expressing ideas.

Future careers aside, learning a basic coding foundation at an early age is beneficial in numerous ways and only adds to a child’s overall preschool education. Plus it’s fun! What students work on in our meetings will enhance and add to what they are learning in their regular classroom. During our weekly meetings, students will:

Expand their problem solving skills
Work on sequencing
Use their imaginations
Work together in small groups
Plan and test strategies
Build confidence
Design things
Strengthen their motor skills
Have fun!

How do we plan to accomplish this? We have three fun tools we will be learning with. To kick the year off we will start with KIBO. Mid-year we will introduce Bee-Bots. Finally, we will round out the year with Scratch Jr.
What is KIBO?
KIBO is a screen-free robot kit that lets 4- to 7-year-olds create, design, decorate and bring their own robot to life! Students use wooden blocks to create a sequence of instructions (programming code). They then scan the blocks with the robot body to tell it what to do. Press a button and the robot comes alive, following their instructions! KIBO is an easy and fun way to bring robotics and coding to young learners and spark their interest in STEAM.

What is Bee-Bot?
Bee-Bot is an exciting little screen-free robot designed for use by young children. Bee-Bot is the perfect tool for teaching counting, sequencing, estimation, problem-solving and strategizing. Directional keys are used to code up to 40 commands that send Bee-Bot forward, back, left and right. Pressing the green GO! button starts Bee-Bot on its way. Bee-Bot blinks, beeps, moves in 6” steps and circles in 90-degree turns. There are endless creative and fun possibilities with Bee-Bot!

What is ScratchJr?
ScratchJr is an introductory programming language app that enables young children to create their own interactive stories and games. We will be learning ScratchJr on iPads. Children snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. Children can modify characters in the paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, even insert photos of themselves — then use the programming blocks to make their characters come to life.
